Design submission for a boutique spa resort on the Irish Sea Coastline.
We enjoyed the challenge of conceptualising a coastal boutique accommodation village that married views over the Irish Sea, complex topography, industrial heritage within the historic village of Glenarm in Co. Antrim.
Our proposal retained the form of the mill structures and supplements them with additional buildings in a manner that is representative of the ‘Whiting Mill’ layout.
The unique history of the site is addressed through the retained chimney, a prominent feature with the opportunity of using it as a public observation deck is explored.
A new 2 story bedroom block is positioned to benefit from view across the historic village and sea, without being obstructed by taller retained structures and is knit into the existing built forms through a single storey reception and social space, centrally located to give easy access to all accommodation.
Bespoke glamping pods are influenced by natural geological shapes accessed from the main building through walking trials designed to link accommodation facilities with the ecological elements of the site. Designed as irregular forms, clad in limestone, these vary to address different occupancy needs and are sited to maximise views whilst retaining privacy.
The natural ecology and cliff backdrops will work to integrate the spatial layout into the natural environment, with all elements seeking to enjoy panoramic views of the harbour to the sea beyond.
We were unsuccessful with this particular submission but enjoyed the process and the design solution arrived at.
