Downpatrick Railway Viewing Gallery

main project photo

Creating a modern hub for exploring Northern Ireland's railway heritage.

Synopsis

REQA were pleased to work on this special visitor space housing some of the highest quality steam engine and carriages. The project encompassed the extension of a workshop facility to create a new, visitor orientated exhibition space.

The scale of the steam engines and carriages as the basis for spatial layout but creating the right experience for visitors was of equal importance. We worked to design clear circulation around the exhibitions and complemented this with roof lights to maximise the amount of natural light to fill the volume.

Knitting 3 new track lines into the wider railway infrastructure was a challenge but essential for the historic vehicles ability to move into the new space.
